Photo essay: Mahtab Hussain’s Muslims in America

Over the past five years, the photographer has journeyed across the US making images of everyday Muslims. Now he’s ready for more
Photographer Mahtah Hussain has been working on his long-term project Muslims in America since 2021. Travelling across the US, he has spent countless hours chronicling the lives of ordinary Muslims.
“For years, many Muslims felt they needed to be invisible to survive. But, two decades on, a new generation is not hiding, wanting to be seen and understood, and who are shaping their styles and identities in distinctly American ways,” he says.
Hussain is now fundraising to finance further work on the project, with the aim of visiting more cities. His intention is to “make visible the powerful idea of umma that connects Muslims across geography and background”.
