The Hyphen Ramadan price index 2025

As the cost of living continues to rise, we compare the year-on-year effect of inflation on a range of iftar staples

Across the UK, millions of Muslims are busy stocking their cupboards, fridges and freezers in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, which begins at the end of February.

The annual inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages declined for most of 2024 but is now rising again, up from 2% in December to 3.3% in January 2025, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures. Meanwhile, researchers at the British Retail Consortium predict that food shopping costs will increase by 4.2% in the second half of 2025.

According to the Food Foundation — a charity that has been tracking food insecurity since 2020 — 7.2 million adults and 2.7 million children did not have access to enough affordable food to meet their needs in June 2024. Of the households that experienced food insecurity, 26% were of ethnic minority backgrounds.

For the third year running, we’ve compared the current prices of a variety of Ramadan staples with how much they cost in the preceding years. Overall UK annual food price inflation has fallen in the past year, from 7% in January 2024, according to the ONS. However, while food prices may be rising more slowly, they are still rising. Our 2025 Ramadan food price index found that almost every essential ingredient has increased in price in the past year.

In 2025, the items that have increased most in price compared to last year are flour, coconut milk and vermicelli. The difference is more pronounced when compared to 2022, with the cost of some flour products rising by more than 100%. In addition to the regular items on our list, a 500ml bottle of Napolina Extra Virgin Olive Oil now costs £6.83, while it cost £6.37 in February 2024, a 7% rise. The price of 1.5kg of coarse semolina by Tropical Sun has also increased 7% from £3.00 to £3.20, while the cost of Biona organic millet has remained the same at £2.41.
