Rap duo Krept & Konan have made an unlikely move into retail with the opening of an “inclusive” supermarket in Croydon, south London.

Casyo Johnson (Krept) and Karl Wilson (Konan) hope Saveways, on Beddington Lane, will be a one-stop shop for the local Black and Asian communities. The 15,000 sq ft store offers a halal butcher, bakery and wide range of produce and seasonings from South Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. There’s also a large hair and beauty section catering to the needs of its diverse customer base. Saveways even features a prayer room and a large bathroom for wudu.

The hip-hop artists have partnered with hospitality entrepreneur Kaysor Ali, founder of the Steakout and Smacks Hamburgers franchises.

“We have to go to multiple places to get different things, like going to the butchers for specific meats, then going to another place for plantain or the supermarket for something else,” says Johnson.

“We thought, why don’t we have everything in one place so people don’t have to have that shopping experience?”

Ali adds: “You have that comfort factor when you see all the brands you can resonate with.”
