In 2020, Ramadan began in late April, during the first UK Covid-19 lockdown. In May, the rules began to ease, shifting to a tiered system of restrictions. During that uncertain time, Leicester-based photographer Nadia Girach started work on Ramadan Revelations, a contemplative and moving project exploring the deep spiritual connection experienced by many Muslims in a unique holy month.

“This series depicts Ramadan in a surrealist sense using my own family, friends and strangers who all experienced a lockdown Ramadan,” she says. “The images seek to show the pureness of faith and prayer, and a larger experience many had then.

“I sought to capture the emotions of people observing Ramadan. The work aims to depict the ethereal nature of faith and the unique closeness fostered within families and communities during an unprecedented time.”
